While these ideas aren't expressed explicitly on the Nader agenda, I
believe these sorts of issues would be in keeping with Green aims.
Agricultural Policy:
I think we could bring up more then just industrial hemp. For example,
while a solar powered electric car is ideal, there are other options for
automotive construction that are less hazardous then fossil fuels, and
many of these options directly affect american agriculture. There is
technology available
that can burn ethanol produced from american corn crops. Ethanol burns
much cleaner then fossil fuels, producing much less carbon monoxide and
could serve as a better alternative to fossil fuels until better
alternatives are finantially reasonable. Pursuing this
technology would help american farmers and end much of the ecological
damage done by big oil companies.
The issue of industrial hemp can tie into the drug war. One of the
primary reasons there is such an influx of drugs into our country is
because of the enormous profit margins involved. these substances are
easy to produce and ship providing the dealer with huge profits. Not only
should it be legal to grow industrial hemp, all hemp should be legal let
alone many other banned plants. In
many ways the war on drugs is also punishing legitimate agriculture,
because it prohibits them from cashing in on this lucrative bussiness.
(I could get into the inanity of us drug laws.....but that would be off
topic)
As far as education goes, none of the candidates are talking about
changing the content of education. Most other industrialized countries
have a much stronger secondary schooling programs bassed upon improved and
dynamic teaching techniques (I don't really feel like going into all of
these, but basically they are all bassed upon thought stimulation instead
of rote mimorization). Yet, none of the candidates is considering
changing the fundamental nature of education in this country. Bush talks
a lot about bringing in "character education" into schools (as if bush had
character www.georgebush2000.com that is some funny shit). For him this
seems to mean the 10 commandments and using the lecturn as a bully pulpit.
But, our schools are in serious need of a positive and affirming
atmosphere. Of cousre, any time we try to teach understanding and respect
(I have two daddies.....that was a messy controversy in my home state) we
get nailed. We do need some sort of values in our schools, but they must
be bassed upon respect and diversity instead of an
oppresive-victorian-draconian-white-way-is-the-best-way philosophy.
I feel I have ranted too long. Sorry about that.
