A polished letter written by a few people may be good, but a mass of individual letters sure looks good, too, and it builds the pressure further. Wednesday we'll be on the quad, just outside of the union, from 10-3pm. Look for us if you can't find us. :) We could use a little help with staffing. I, for instance, have volunteered to work the table from 1-2ish, but if someone could relieve me, that'd be great because I like my job. On Thursday, MTV is hosting a Rock The Vote concert at Frat Park (3rd & Daniel, Champaign) from noon to 4pm [correct me if someone knows better]. We want to have a table out there, and it'd be great to have lots of people picketting with posters and such. It could be a lot of fun! If people volunteer over email, that's fine and great, but people are welcome to just show up, too. I had another thought ... it might be fun for some people to bring some signs to the Tossers show at the union on the 22nd. I'd describe the Tossers as an Irish/punk band from Chicago with a good share of political overlap with Rage Against the Machine -- and at least as much fun. I'm not naming names, but I think At least one of the opening bands (Humpty Dumpster, Amazing Transparent Man) would welcome a pro-Nader presence. Food for thought. I've got it on tape if anyone is interested. It was cool but not enough, I get a little Nader and I need more! :) But I spent the evening making flyers to hand out so I am appeased. I made a bunch of different quarter sheets that can be copied en masse and distributed to whoever. You can pick some up at the SfN table tomorrow on the quad between 10am and 3pm. Lets bombard the dorms and random people on the quad with this stuff. I made 4 different quarter sheet flyers, the idea is that if different people get a different message then maybe some of them will talk to each other about the varying messages they got and share, thus increasing the effectiveness of our flyering through the wonders of distributed cognition! All the flyers have some big headlines for the short attention spanned and _lots_ of information in a smaller font for those whose interest we grab. Teach them something right there on the spot. Maybe we could hand these out down in the food area of the quad too, bored people can read them while they eat. Be creative! -- Zachary C. Bush Message-ID: This is an article from the latest "The Nation". I thought it was excellent. Read on. Bush--A Leader Who Can Lead Us by Cort Ruddy In a novel approach to foreign policy, George W. Bush recently asked Cuban President Fidel Castro to adopt democracy. Bush said, "Mr. Castro, let your people live in freedom." He also said, "I challenge the Castro regime to surprise the world and adopt the ways of democracy." Why hasn't an American politician thought of this angle before? Sure, past leaders have tried threats, sanctions and even outright insults (not to mention invasions, coup attempts, sabotage, etc.), but the Governor's bold approach of just asking gives Americans a glimpse of the fresh perspective a President Bush would bring to the White House. Bush's dealings with Castro have set a high bar for his future work with foreign leaders. Many political observers hoped Bush, in subsequent meetings, would tell Mexico's new leader, President-elect Vicente Fox, to raise his country's standard of living, ASAP. So far, the Mexican economy has yet to rebound. But if Bush manages to fix our neighbors to the South, he can then turn his eyes to the rest of the world's troubles. As Bush grappled with Latin American issues, President Clinton added to his travel expenses by heading to Tanzania to "support" an end to Burundi's civil war. How wasteful. If elected, President Bush could simply pick up the phone and tell the Hutus and Tutsis to just knock it off. A President Bush could ask China to be nicer to Christians. Or he could tell Jews and Arabs to stop fighting so much. While he's at it, he could set those Irish straight and tell the revolutionary forces in Russia to simmer down. Once Bush has stopped all the world's conflicts, he could turn his problem-solving prowess to famine, disease and natural disaster. First, he could tell starving Ethiopians, Eat a sandwich or something. And he could tell people in sub-Saharan Africa to stop spreading the AIDS virus. Then he could propose that folks in Taiwan not live so dang close to water. Why stop there, though? Bush could solve the planet's overpopulation by asking our friends in India to stop having so many kids, and he could avert environmental disaster by telling Brazilians to quit messing with the rainforest. Truth is, Bush could bring prosperity to the world by telling the whole global community to prosper, pronto, and by asking the developing world to just develop already. Problem solved. As for America's domestic dilemmas, forget about them. They don't stand a chance. It's exciting to think of what a nice place the world would be if a President Bush could unleash his leadership ability on the planet--cutting taxes all the while. I hope everyone enjoyed this article. We want a world where no child goes hungry, where workers have the right to organize without fear, where access to health care is determined by medical need. We want a world where everyone has clean air to breathe and clean water to drink and where funding for free public education isn't questioned. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund promote and impose policies that foster union-busting; environmental abuse; indebtedness; sweatshops; privatization of health care, education, and water; and corporate control over our lives. The power of working people around the world to democratically determine their own path to development must be dramatically enhanced. Let's be part of it! Let's aim to sell 750 tickets here as the central Illinois outlet for the Chicago arena event. I'm thinking it may be a great idea to arrange charter buses and a package deal: $7 for the event plus whatever the going rate is for a bus trip to Chicago and back. Any suggestions as to which bus company to go with? We'd need one that potentially could do a dozen buses or more. That's in addition to carpooling action that we could help organize. Yet another thing to plan out at the S4N and Green Tea meetings tomorrow night! jb On Mon, 18 Sep 2000, Zachary Miller wrote: > Dan Johnson-Weinberger wrote: > > To: illinoisballot@egroups.com > > From: "Dan Johnson-Weinberger" > > Subject: [illinoisballot] 10/10 10,000 people. We will be filling up the 10,000 seat UIC Pavilion in Chicago with a MASSIVE Nader rally on October 10th!!! It is a go! We just got word from national 60 minutes ago. SAVE THE DATE! October 10th, a Tuesday night, from 7-11 pm at the UIC Pavilion. TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW! Forward this email. GET TO CHICAGO ON THE 10TH! This will be the biggest political rally in Chicago in 2000. Bigger than anything Bush or Gore can do. The biggest. This is what democracy looks like. Tickets will be seven bucks (less if you are broke, more if you can afford it). They will be available in the next few days -- but start spreading the word and making plans to come to the Pavilion. This will be huge -- and it will work if we get people to come. So start working now! Commit to brining 12 people for sure. If you are interested in helping make this event happen, then come to the office tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6:30 pm. National is sending in the organizers who made Portland happen, and will be making Seattle, Minneapolis and Boston happen this weekend (those are all 10,000 person events). If you can't make that meeting but want to make this event successful, email me at djw@VoteNader.org and I will plug you in. Take charge and be a leader on this one -- this will be HUGE and we have 21 days to make it happen. That is an intense timeline but we can do it. LET'S PACK THE HOUSE!!!! 10K on 10/10!!!! OK, back to the Battle for the Ballot. Things are looking good. Today, attorney Andy Spiegel won most of his motion before the hearing officer. We essentially got the Board to reject 1200 Democratic objections (legal specifics to follow). We did not get the Board to reject another 2000 or so at this stage in the game, but they will ultimately be rejected. So it was a partial win, but certainly a win. Thanks to Andy Spiegel for a great job. Looks like we will be continuing the binder check through next Monday, and (long shot) Tuesday. There will be a preliminary hearing next Tuesday at 4 pm, when the Board will release their count of valid signatures, which will make it clear which side has the burden to continue (if we have more than 25,000, then the Dems have the burden; if we have less than 25,000 then we have the burden). Based on how many signatures we've been getting back, we expect to have more than 25,000 signatures by the end of the binder check. That doesn't even include the rehabilitation that we're doing, which involves finding some signatures that the election judges did not and the affidavits (which will be on the web tonight or tomorrow). So we're in good shape. And why are we in good shape? Because of volunteer people-power. Because people have taken time off of work and spend hours in front of a computer screen, in hand-to-hand combat with the Democratic machine, to save each and every signature that we can. Because more than 106 different people have volunteered in this Battle for the Ballot. Because the Green machine is mightier than the Democratic machine! One more week of this, and we'll be done with the binder check. We are done with Chicago, and have moved onto the 5th floor. We're doing suburban Cook County (same building at 69 West Washington) through Wednesday, and will be back on the 6th floor to do collar counties that are sent to Chicago (for convenience) Thursday (this is new), Friday and Monday. Evenings is data entry at the office, except for Tuesday, which is the BIG meeting on the HUGE event at the Pavilion on 10/10. Spread that word! Ticketmaster isn't going to be distributing our tickets --- we are! There will be no high-priced corporate skyboxes. Seven bucks to get into the biggest political rally in Chicago -- what a deal! More to come tomorrow -- hope to see you on Tuesday. Members and friends of the local Green Party affiliate meet to plan campaign events, and to discuss this month's reading, a selection from 'Small is Beautiful.' (If you haven't yet read it, stop by anyway - Joan Cole has prepared a great 'cheat sheet.') Two MAJOR campaign related events that will be announced and planned at both meetings tonight are: * FRIDAY, SEPT. 22 IN SPRINGFIELD: THE all-day BATTLE FOR THE BALLOT and noontime BILLIONAIRES FOR BUSH OR GORE RALLY - Friday's the day when all 1,400 of the Dems' challenges to downstate Nader/LaDuke signatures need to be fought back. We NEED people who can go to Springfield with us at 7 a.m. (in time to get to the Board of Elections office at 9 a.m.) and can stay all day. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET RALPH ON THE BALLOT, SO PLEASE HELP! - At noon Friday, we've got a permit to gather on the statehouse steps as Billionaires for Bush or Gore, to thank this fine state's legislators for protecting the electorate from third party candidates! We need YOU, we need tuxes, pearls and feather boas, we need rubber chickens, we need signs and puppets, and we need media coverage. So if you can't come for the full day of ballot challenges, you can still be part of the action. Learn more at tonight's meetings, and if you can't be there, please contact me directly. These events are being coordinated by the Prairie Greens, the Springfield Greens and the Illinois Nader Campaign, so it's a great time to get to know people from beyond the C/U community who share our goals. * TUESDAY, OCT. 10 IN CHICAGO: TEN TEN TEN THOUSAND! - We'll be organizing a contingent of UI and other C/U folks to attend this major Nader/LaDuke campaign event - a night of progressive politics with the Green Party nominees at the Chicago Pavilion, which seats 10,000. Our goal is to sell several hundred tickets locally, and to arrange charter bus transportation for people without cars to get there and back. This is a major initiative, AND SUCCESS COULD PAVE THE WAY TO GET RALPH DOWN HERE TO CHAMPAIGN LATER IN THE CAMPAIGN SEASON. Apologies for all the caps above, but these are both big, big events - if you've been sitting on the fence, lurking on these lists waiting for the right time to get involved, THIS IS IT. Things are looking good indeed for Ralph and Winona on the Illinois ballot, and the campaign is gearing up in Illinois and locally. Getting involved NOW can make all the difference. Hope to see lots of people at tonight's meetings! If you'd like to be there but neither one fits your schedule, let us know about your interest. It may be time to start holding some weekend meetings as well. Message-ID: <4.2.0.58.20000921212449.00a32550@students.uiuc.edu> Several C/U people have had to back out on their plans to go to Springfield to fight the Nader ballot challenges tomorrow (Friday, 9/22). We're honestly not quite sure if we'll have enough people there all day to save enough signatures to get Nader and LaDuke on the ballot - it's that close, and tomorrow in Springfield is that important. So if you've been waiting to see if the situation's dire enough to spend the day going 90 miles over to Springfield and back, it looks like it is. The good news is that it'll be a very fun day if we do get enough people: nice food, fine weather, great chances to meet people, and of course the noontime BILLIONAIRES FOR BUSH OR GORE rally that the media's already been invited to. We've even got some extra costumes and signs for people who just show up. Please give me a call as soon as you see this - up to 11 tonight anyway. Or if you're up by 6 tomorrow and see this then, a call then is fine, too. There are at least 2 drivers going, probably 3, and each has room for 3-4 people. We're also looking for an additional driver or 2 who can leave mid-morning to arrive in time for the rally and help protect signatures in the afternoon. Thanks to everyone for helping out with the table today. Early showers only delayed our efforts, but we were out there strong, even with the fun Grito de Lares festivities amidst us. Remember that our next meeting will be on Tuesday at 6pm at the McKinley Foundation (5th and John/Daniel) at the teach-in for IMF/WB. It'll be great fun, so bring some friends. Also spread the word about this bus ride. Flyering would be a good idea. We have about a week to sell tickets... A lot of people seem interested, so it'll be great fun... It is located at the intersection of First and Kirby. 2. Print these words: “Students for Nader” On an index card, or sheet of paper. 3. Place the card on the driver’s side dash of your vehicle, facing up, so that a parking enforcement officer can read it. Message-ID: <4.2.0.58.20000922190300.00b25d10@students.uiuc.edu> The Greens did a fantastic job of beating back the Dem challenges to getting Nader on the Illinois ballot today - out of 1,400 downstate signatures challenged in Springfield, election judges overruled nearly 800, for a success rate of nearly 60 percent! According to the best figures we have right now, that means we're looking at a total of over 27,000 good signatures! (Either unchallenged or with the challenges overruled by election judges). And that's not counting the continuing action in Chicago and surrounding counties today. We won't know for sure until a hearing on Tuesday, but it's looking very much as if we've succeeded in getting Ralph Nader and Winona LaDuke on the Illinois ballot! To beat us, it looks like the Dem challengers would have to somehow overturn rulings for well over 2,000 signatures - and we just don't think that's gonna happen, even in the land of the Chicago machine. Best of all, we finished our work in plenty of time to rally as Billionaires for Bush or Gore on the statehouse steps and in the rotunda. It was a wonderful little action with participation from the Prairie Greens, Springfield Greens and Chicago Greens. So what if we were few in number? In this land of wealth for votes, we were seven billion strong! We also got some very nice media attention from the Springfield and Decatur dailies and several area radio stations. Special thanks to Matt M and Tim G, who went over with me to the challenge at the ungodly hour of 6:30 this morning, and to Laurel P. The 4 of us actually outnumbered the Springfield Greens who were able to take part - with Rita B from Chicago coming down to help out, we juuuust baaarely had enough people to defend the eight desks where the election judges were going over the signatures. Folks, it was definitely touch and go today, and we survived and thrived. One of these days we're gonna sincerely have to thank the Dems for making us stronger. For now, we can just celebrate. BTW, we did a little videotaping of the statehouse event - I'll try to have some clips up in RealAudio format in a day or two - highly entertaining! The local Billionaires may just have to do an encore engagement as part of the street theater during next Tuesday's 9/26 events. Cheers, all, and don't forget to flip to CSPAN tonight (at 8 Central, as it turns out) for the 2-hour Minneapolis rally, live in its entirety! GO WE GO! Message-ID: <4.2.0.58.20000923095339.00bcb720@students.uiuc.edu> Here's a neat way to augment that word of mouth that Ralph was talking about at last night's Minneapolis super-rally (hope lots of folks saw it on CSPAN, live!): Inkjet democracy! Several great sites have lots of downloadable Nader/Greens/progressive agit-art ready for printing onto posters, t-shirts, etc. Here's a slightly annotated and very partial list: http://www.GreenGrafix.com/ - Our purpose is to create a gallery of FREE graphics, banners, and animations for web use, to promote a variety of Progressive issues and organizations. See the 'banners,' 'buttons,' and 'links' links at the bottom, too. http://home.earthlink.net/~orchill/index.html - Walking Billboard Designs. Several beautiful multi-color designs to reverse-print onto t-shirt iron-on transfers. Great for tabling and leafletting! http://www.oro.net/~dscanlan/NaderResource.html - Dan Scanlan makes his designs available in normal (for posters) and reverse (for t-shirts) and in low and high resolutions. http://www.billionairesforbushorgore.com/materials/posters.html - the ever popular Billionaires site has several great poster designs (much seen about town, btw) that are suitable both for t-shirts and framing. Making your own t-shirts is easy and fun. All it takes is an 8.5x11" iron-on transfer (available at discount and office stores around town for about $10-$12 per 10-pack), an iron, and a new or old t-shirt. White and light-color shirts work best. They're even more fun to wear - it's like having a cartoon bubble over your head expressing your thoughts all day long! Posters can easily be photocopied, blown up or even color laser-printed at print shops like Kinko's. If anyone knows easy ways to make home grown buttons, bumper stickers, pennants, yard signs, etc. (esp. waterproof ones), please share these ideas! And let's see your work - wear/display this stuff proudly in classes, on the quad, in the grocery store, on your door. It's one-to-one alternative media, and it works. I'd love to hear about other art out there that's ready to use the same ways - and about other neat ways to use this stuff. Go We Go! WE WIN!!! Today at 4:00 pm at a hearing before the State Board of Elections hearing officer the Democrats withdrew their objections to the Nader petitions!! After the state came up with their figure of at least 27, 698 signatures and the Greens came up with a figure of about 900 more, the Democrats ceded defeat and surrendered. NADER IS ON IN ILLINOIS!! SPREAD THE WORD!! NADER IS ON IN ILLINOIS!!! Call the press -- call the radio stations -- Nader in on the ballot in Illinois!! We will be having a press conference at 11 am at the new office (59 East Van Buren, 14th floor) so invite everyone you know and come to celebrate our victory! How did the Green Party manage to fight back an onslaught from the Democratic machine? With TREMENDOUS people power! We had more than 150 different people work on the Battle for the Ballot. 150 different volunteers coming in to defend Nader's place on the Illinois ballot -- that is extraordinary. That's how we are celebrating now -- because of people working hard to defend our democracy. Not to mention the dozens and dozens of people that worked so hard to collect the 39,000 signatures in the first place. A huge thank you to everyone -- especially Emmitt, Rita and Sean -- who worked so tirelessly to keep on collecting signatures, in the face of what seemed to be hopeless desperation. They kept on plugging away and thanks to them we are running the Nader/LaDuke campaign in Illinois. This is not formally complete (we have to wait for the State Board of Elections to meet early next week and officially rule on the report from the hearing officer), but the Democrats have withdrawn all objections, so there is nothing left but the paperwork. TIME TO SING FAT LADY!!! THE BATTLE FOR THE BALLOT IS ALL OVER!!!! NOW, we need to fill the Pavilion October 10th. Get in to the office at 59 East Van Buren, 14th floor. Get some tickets for the super rally, sell them to your friends and family and get ready to rock on October 10th with some independent progressive politics!
